soul mamma

spent saturday afternoon wandering aimlessly though harlem in search of a few things that ness forgot to write down. we had the addresses, but weren’t quite sure of what to expect once we got there. all good fun though, i could happily wander aimlessly around manhattan for the next twenty years.
brilliant southern style soul food was to follow at amy ruths. honey fried chicken, mac and cheese, collared greens, jerk chicken, cherry kool-aid, corn bread, waffles and real mash all helped bring the hunger under control. a lady drinking alcohol out of a paper bag at the table behind us was a nice touch too.
later some malt liquor – it didn’t seem all that strong, though the many preceeding beer might have had something to do with that – was enlisted to get us ready for our tried and true fallback, the east village. or LES, to her friends.
the ace bar it was. there was cheap beer, skeeball and random locals ready to engage in our usual discussions of kangaroos and politics.
